MonumentsMonuments are upright headstones used to honor the life of loved ones in a simple yet profound manner. Typically they are inscribed with the name, date of birth, date of death, and a few words. With new technology; etchings and porcelain pictures can also be added. A monument has a top and a base. The top is called a die. Traditional upright monuments come in three shapes: Serpentine "Serp", Oval Top, and Roof Top. The Serp Die is the most popular of traditional monuments. It has a gentle serpentine curve that can either be polished or be rough. The Oval Top Die, as the name implies, has a consistent slope to the top like an oval, usually with a rise of 1.5" - 2" from the monument edge top. The Roof Top Die is similar to the oval top die except it rises into a point like a roof. Both the oval top and the roof top can be polished or left rough cut. To view monuments that do not fall in the traditional category see our Special Shapes page. Ohio Valley Memorials carry upright monuments in three types: Single, Double and Wing.
